For those of us trying EVE, be aware that the guild you're with is absolutely KEY. If you're with a shit guild, it will suck. If you're with a solid group of experienced players you'll be successful early on and just keep rolling.
EVE has several grinds, the biggest of which is the money grind. Without money, you can't buy replacement ships. Get with a good guild that has a way to make money and you're set. This is not hard at all, you just need to find the right bunch. Like Dolly was saying, higher level missions will make you rich decently fast.
Skill grind: EVE doesn't have levels, only skills which train by time, like you downloaded an online course that just takes a set while to program into your brain. You need skills to use more advanced equipment and to make your ship perform better. It's all very well thought out. My point is that you can earn the money you need while you're training the skills, then work up to some good ships. Player skill is important. You need to know how to outfit your ship with the most effective gear, and how to effectively use what you have. Give a noob a great tricked out ship and he will die against an experienced player with a weaker ship. Then you loot his great gear and get rich.
Standings grind: you get the money making missions by doing lame missions until you get enough standing with a particular NPC faction. As you get more standing you get better and better missions. You can have people help you on the missions too.
Just stay with fun people who will help you make money, and then learn PVP. You can be in group battles even in little weenie noob ships.
To quote Scarface: "First you get the money. When you get the money, you get the power. When you get the power, then you get the woman."
Except it's EVE. There are no women. Except Dolly, and she's not playing it right now.
I'm waiting for Incarna to come out, the expansion where they'll give EVE characters full bodies like in most games. Then I'll resubscribe, give my char big fat tits, and hang out in space station bars caging drinks and playing blackjack.
